Modern sports stadiums are increasingly developing, with architects and facilities managers constantly redefining design and functionality parameters. Technology and commercial generation are two of the biggest influences in such developments in stadium designs.
But how do stadium owners optimise their arena space? Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative retractable service units which provide a safe and secure outdoor power source. This source of electricity is crucial for power during events such as LED floodlighting or digital information displays, and also aids maintenance for sports pitches (e.g. UV lighting rigs or sprinkler systems).
Trends influencing stadium design
The first stadiums of the modern era started to emerge in the late 19th century. Sports such as the Olympics and football were establishing themselves into society. Early designs were fairly robust and simple, as stadiums served their purpose for a particular event. Football stadiums for football matches. Athletic stadiums for athletic events.
However, over the past twenty years there has been a significant shift in focus when designing sports stadiums and arenas, which can be described two-fold. One change is a move away from early single-purpose stadiums, to multi-purpose venues which supports a more diverse event calendar. The second shift in focus relates to an increase in focus on safety and comfort aspects for spectators.
A safe outdoor power supply
To elaborate on the safety aspect first of all, stadiums of any sport or recreational event have a duty to guarantee spectator and staff safety, and are subject to strict rules and regulations in their design and operation. The floodlights must be supported by a secondary power source. Also, various electrical equipment around pitches, running tracks or other sporting areas has to minimise any potential hazards – such as trip or electrocution risks from trailing wires.
Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative pop up power units which are ideal to use in such outdoor areas within sports stadiums and arenas. Not only do they provide a reliable and secure source of electricity or water supply, the power units are retractable in nature. The range of Pop Up Units can be easily raised to provide a power source, and when they are not needed they are simply lowered back into the ground, blending seamlessly with their immediate surroundings. Our range of In-Ground Units (or Flip Lid Units) are able to provide a power supply with their lids locked down.
Our power units installed at Chelsea FC and Mary Peters Track
We supplied nine of our PUPS01 power units to Chelsea Football Club, and were installed around the perimeter of the pitch. The lids of the unit accommodate the turf therefore when they are lowered into the ground they appear seamless with the surroundings. When ground staff work begin maintenance on the pitch they raise the units (with a simple detachable handle) where they provide electricity for the UV lighting equipment.
Our Flip Lid Units were installed at Mary Peters Track in Belfast. The track, which provides athletes a place to train, coach and jog, required a range of electrical equipment which needed powering e.g. lighting rigs and digital information displays. The In Ground Units provide a safe and secure outdoor power source for the track, with the added benefit that they operate with the lids locked down. The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structure, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461.
Multi-purpose stadium designs and their power considerations
Modern stadiums incorporate much more of a focus on multi-use venues, where stadiums not only combine different sports but also combine sports with entertainment events. This is as a result of a growing need to increase commercial abilities of stadiums and increase stadium revenues.
An increasing number of football stadiums have running tracks around the perimeter of the pitch; some stadiums host both football and rugby matches; and even there is a growing trend where football stadiums incorporate American Football (NFL) matches, due to the increasing popularity of the sport within the UK.
Designing stadiums for such a variety of purposes notably puts pressures and stresses on the operational maintenance of the stadium. Our range of pop up power units help to alleviate such pressures, as they are able to provide a reliable source of power and water in order to effectively maintain pitch surfaces.
Our pop up power units and flip lid units also provide an innovative power solution for stadiums when they host various entertainment events. Music artists, comedians and other entertainment acts often use stadiums nowadays to host their events. Such events require power sources around the floor area (usually the pitch area) for lighting, speaker systems and large television screens.
Our retractable service units provide a secure power solution for such equipment, also having a significant benefit in terms of their safety aspect. Public safety is always of paramount concern for event organisers and stadium owners. Pedestrian access has to be clear as possible and the risk of electrocution has to be minimal, to ensure public areas are safe and comfortable for people. Our retractable nature means they can be raised from the ground and lowered back again with minimal effort, ensuring walkways are clear and free from any form of tripping hazard or risk of electrocution.
The final consideration for creating multi-purpose stadium facilities is the ability to provide a suitable area for food services. Such food stalls and kiosks provide a large revenue stream for stadiums, and require a stable electricity supply to power their cooking equipment. Our pop up power units are ideal for such food services as they can be raised from the ground when needed, and when match days or entertainment events are over, they are simply lowered back into the ground until next time.
Our PUPS01 power units have been installed in the walkways and concourse around Wembley Arena Square, where they provide a safe and secure power supply for food services and other stalls and kiosks which require electricity.
Future stadium designs and power supply influences
There is a growing trend of sports stadiums being designed and constructed in city centre locations, partly due to urban regeneration projects and the rise of mixed-use developments. Stadiums will start to combine with other community buildings/projects such as hotels, retail premises, park areas, leisure facilities, commercial units and residential buildings.
Such mixed-use developments are usually connected by outdoor areas or concourses, which have high footfalls and are popular for events and various stalls and kiosks. Architects, developers, and electrical engineers greatly consider public safety when designing external power supplies for outdoor spaces. Pedestrian access has to be clear as possible and the risk of electrocution has to be minimal, to ensure public areas are safe and comfortable for people.
